Liberty is immortal.

Today we pause and remember what has befallen our country. 10 years ago, 19 men attacked not simply a country; they attacked a way of life. They rammed home the first serious strike landed against our home land in nearly 200 years with an unprovoked strike against what they perceived to be the heart of our civilization taking the lives of well over 3000 men and women, these Islamic Jihadists hoped to destroy the individual freedom and liberty so enjoyed by the West, captained by the stalwart beacon of liberty the United States of America. With their actions they hoped to initiate a chain of events that would supplant our way of life with their own violent and evil ideology that cannot abide contention or critical discussion or dissent.

But they did not understand who they were attacking. Unlike their backwards third world peoples, we do not centralize our beliefs or way of life around a physical construct. The symbols of our nation are just that, symbols, they do not themselves contain who we are. When we say that “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” It is not conditional on what buildings stand or people live on our great land, these truths are and always will be what America IS. And as long as one person still lives who holds fast to those foundational truths the idea of Freedom and the idea of America will live on. You see freedom cannot be killed. Sure through neglect or ambivalence freedom and liberty can be allowed to slip away and die, but through violence and terror you only make the determination to live free of such things stronger and more defined.

Violence, tyranny and intimidation cannot kill the idea of freedom, but it can carve it out of the dust. That is a lesson that I believe we have been teaching the Islamic guerillas pretty much every day for the last 10 years. And as long as America exists in even one person we will all continue to pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes, and our sacred Honor in the defense and maintenance of the idea of Freedom in the United States of America.

Never forget 9/11/01.

And never forget who we are.
